32T32R
Understanding 32T32R
Legacy macrocell antennas use 2T2R or 4T4R configurations with sector antennas that have fixed beam patterns. Massive MIMO replaces these with large antenna arrays that can electronically steer narrow beams to individual users, dramatically improving spectral efficiency and capacity.
A 32T32R Active Antenna Unit (AAU) integrates 32 complete RF chains (PA, filter, ADC/DAC) with the antenna elements into a single weatherproof enclosure. Each RF chain independently controls the phase and amplitude of its signal, enabling the baseband processor to form multiple simultaneous beams pointing at different users. The 3D beamforming capability also allows vertical beam tilting to reduce inter-cell interference.
Garray = 10 log10(N) = 10 log10(32) = 15.1 dB
Total EIRP (typical):
PPA = 2W per chain × 32 = 64W total + 15 dB gain = 200W EIRP per beam
Capacity vs. 4T4R (field measured):
DL: 3-5× throughput improvement
UL: 2-3× throughput improvement
Beam resolution:
Azimuth: ~12° (8 elements horizontal)
Elevation: ~25° (4 elements vertical)
Panel dimensions: ~600×400×250 mm, ~25 kg typical.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does 32T32R mean physically?
32 independent RF chains (PA, ADC/DAC, antenna element each) in a single panel. Typically 192 elements with sub-arrays of 2-4 elements per chain. Enables full digital beamforming in azimuth and elevation for 3D beam steering and MU-MIMO.
32T32R vs. 64T64R?
64T64R adds ~3 dB gain and more MU-MIMO layers but costs 2× more with 1.5-2× power consumption. 32T32R captures 80-90% of the capacity gain at lower cost. It is the sweet spot for most sub-6 GHz urban macrocells.
Capacity improvement over 4T4R?
3-5× DL, 2-3× UL throughput from beamforming gain (15 dB), MU-MIMO (8-16 simultaneous users), and 3D beamforming that reduces inter-cell interference by 3-5 dB through vertical beam tilting.
