Massive MIMO

/mass-iv my-moh/
Massive MIMO uses 64+ antenna elements (64T64R typical) for spatial multiplexing and beamforming. Capacity: C = K×log2(1+(M/K)×SNR). Serves 8-16 users simultaneously via MU-MIMO. 5-10x spectral efficiency over 4G LTE. TDD required for channel reciprocity (overhead scales with K, not M). 5G NR n77/n78 at 3.5 GHz. AAU: 25-40 kg, 1-2 kW, 53 dBm EIRP.
Config: 64T64R
Gain: 5-10x vs 4G
EIRP: 53 dBm

Understanding Massive MIMO

Massive MIMO is the defining technology of 5G NR, providing the spectral efficiency gains needed to meet exponentially growing data demand. By using dozens or hundreds of antenna elements, the base station can focus energy precisely toward each user while simultaneously serving many users on the same time-frequency resource. This spatial multiplexing, combined with beamforming gain, delivers 5-10x capacity improvement without any additional spectrum.

Massive MIMO Capacity

Capacity scaling:
C = M·B·log2(1+P/(M·σ²)) as M→∞
M = BS antennas, K = users

Array gain:
Garray = 10log(M) dB

Pilot overhead:
τp ≥ K (min orthogonal pilots)

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Capacity?

C = K*log2(1+(M/K)*SNR). 64 antennas, 8 users: ~50 bps/Hz vs. ~7 bps/Hz for 4G (7x). Each user gets M/K array gain (9 dB for 64/8). Multiplexing + beamforming, no extra bandwidth needed.

Why TDD?

Channel reciprocity: estimate DL from UL pilots. Overhead = K pilots (independent of M). FDD would need M pilots per user for feedback, impractical for M=64. All 5G massive MIMO at 3.5 GHz is TDD.

Hardware?

64T64R AAU: 128 antenna ports (dual-pol), 64 GaN PA chains (5-10W each), 64 LNA+ADC receive chains. FPGA/ASIC for digital beamforming. 25-40 kg, 1-2 kW. Vendors: Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, Huawei.
