Massive MIMO
Understanding Massive MIMO
Massive MIMO is the defining technology of 5G NR, providing the spectral efficiency gains needed to meet exponentially growing data demand. By using dozens or hundreds of antenna elements, the base station can focus energy precisely toward each user while simultaneously serving many users on the same time-frequency resource. This spatial multiplexing, combined with beamforming gain, delivers 5-10x capacity improvement without any additional spectrum.
Massive MIMO Capacity
C = M·B·log2(1+P/(M·σ²)) as M→∞
M = BS antennas, K = users
Array gain:
Garray = 10log(M) dB
Pilot overhead:
τp ≥ K (min orthogonal pilots)

Frequently Asked Questions
Capacity?
C = K*log2(1+(M/K)*SNR). 64 antennas, 8 users: ~50 bps/Hz vs. ~7 bps/Hz for 4G (7x). Each user gets M/K array gain (9 dB for 64/8). Multiplexing + beamforming, no extra bandwidth needed.
Why TDD?
Channel reciprocity: estimate DL from UL pilots. Overhead = K pilots (independent of M). FDD would need M pilots per user for feedback, impractical for M=64. All 5G massive MIMO at 3.5 GHz is TDD.
Hardware?
64T64R AAU: 128 antenna ports (dual-pol), 64 GaN PA chains (5-10W each), 64 LNA+ADC receive chains. FPGA/ASIC for digital beamforming. 25-40 kg, 1-2 kW. Vendors: Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, Huawei.
