BeiDou B2

/BAY-doh bee-too/
BDS-3 secondary navigation band: B2a (1176.45 MHz, interop with GPS L5/Galileo E5a) and B2b (1207.14 MHz, interop with Galileo E5b). Both use QPSK(10) at 10.23 Mcps. Wideband AltBOC(15,10) across B2a+B2b spans 51.15 MHz for 3 to 5 cm pseudorange precision. B2b carries PPP-B2b corrections: 0.1 m orbit, 0.3 ns clock, enabling centimeter-level positioning without ground stations (Asia-Pacific coverage). Min power: −159 dBW.

AltBOC BW: 51.15 MHz

Understanding BeiDou B2

The B2 band gives BeiDou its precision edge. While B1C provides the primary navigation signal, the addition of B2a enables ionospheric-free dual-frequency combinations that eliminate the largest error source in GNSS positioning. The wideband AltBOC(15,10) mode, spanning both B2a and B2b simultaneously, pushes code tracking precision to levels previously achievable only with carrier-phase processing.

BeiDou's unique contribution at B2 is the PPP-B2b service: real-time precise orbit and clock corrections broadcast directly from the satellite constellation, eliminating the need for ground-based reference networks or paid correction services. This is a significant architectural difference from GPS and Galileo, which rely on separate augmentation systems (WAAS, EGNOS) or commercial services for precise positioning.

Signal and Iono-Free Parameters

Code: 10,230 chips (pilot: 10 ms)
BW: 20.46 MHz (null-to-null)

Iono-Free Combination (B1C+B2a):

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

B2a vs. B2b?

B2a: 1176.45 MHz, interop GPS L5/Galileo E5a, open service. B2b: 1207.14 MHz, interop Galileo E5b, carries PPP-B2b corrections. Combined AltBOC(15,10): 51.15 MHz for 3 to 5 cm pseudorange.

Why dual-frequency?

Eliminates ionospheric error (2 to 50 m single-freq). B1C+B2a iono-free: removes 99.9% of 1st-order delay. Code accuracy: 0.3 to 1.0 m. Carrier-phase RTK: 1 to 2 cm. Noise penalty: 2.59x amplification factor.

PPP-B2b service?

Free, no-internet PPP via BDS-3 GEO/IGSO. 0.1 m orbit, 0.3 ns clock corrections. 5 to 15 min convergence to <10 cm. Asia-Pacific coverage only. No subscription vs. commercial PPP services.
