5G NR Spectrum

Band n71 (5G NR, 600 MHz)

/band en-SEV-en-tee-wun/
The 5G NR designation for 600 MHz spectrum, spanning 663 to 698 MHz uplink and 617 to 652 MHz downlink (35 MHz paired FDD, reversed duplex). T-Mobile's nationwide low-band 5G layer, launched December 2019 as the foundation of its "first to nationwide 5G" claim. Provides the lowest-frequency 5G coverage in the US with 10 to 15 km rural cell radius. See also: LTE Band 71 detailed reference.

Understanding Band n71

Band n71 is the cornerstone of T-Mobile's nationwide 5G strategy. At 600 MHz, it has the lowest frequency of any US 5G band, providing the best propagation and building penetration. T-Mobile can deploy n71 NR at every cell site with 600 MHz LTE, achieving nationwide 5G coverage without waiting for C-band auctions or mid-band buildout.

The dual-layer architecture is simple: n71 provides 5G everywhere (coverage), and n41 provides 5G speed where deployed (capacity). In areas with both bands, NR-CA aggregates them for coverage plus throughput. In rural areas with only n71, users still get 5G service at 30 to 75 Mbps. This approach gave T-Mobile a 2+ year head start on nationwide 5G vs. Verizon and AT&T.

Band n71 Technical Parameters

Frequency (reversed FDD):
UL: 663 – 698 MHz (35 MHz)
DL: 617 – 652 MHz (35 MHz)
Duplex spacing: −11 MHz (UL above DL)

T-Mobile 5G Architecture:
Coverage: n71 (5–10 MHz carrier, 30–75 Mbps)
Capacity: n41 (100 MHz carrier, 1–2 Gbps)
NR-CA aggregate: n71 + n41 = 1.5+ Gbps

Coverage Advantage:
Rural cell radius: 10–15 km
Building penetration: 6–9 dB (vs. 18–25 at 3.5 GHz)

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Band n71 T-Mobile's most important coverage band?

600 MHz = lowest US cellular frequency. 11 dB less path loss than 2100 MHz. 35 MHz paired (widest US low-band). $7.9B invested in 2017 auction. First NR band deployed (Dec 2019), 2+ years before competitor C-band. Cell radius 10 to 15 km rural.

How does T-Mobile combine n71 with other bands?

NR-CA: n71 (coverage, 5 to 10 MHz, 30 to 75 Mbps) + n41 (capacity, 100 MHz, 1 to 2 Gbps). Where n41 is absent, n71 alone provides basic 5G. Dual-layer (n71 + n41) is T-Mobile's fundamental 5G architecture.

How does n71 compare to n12 and n5?

n71 (600 MHz, 35 MHz, T-Mobile) has best propagation and most bandwidth. n12 (700 MHz, 12 MHz, DSS) and n5 (850 MHz, 25 MHz, DSS) share with LTE, limiting NR throughput. n71 has dedicated NR carriers for better performance.
